born in Germany, raised in South Africa, Currently residing in Stellenbosch.

After his time overseas Jan opened a commercial photographic studio specializing in automotive photography.

He has since travelled to many remote locations where he spent time in the great outdoors which piqued his interest in nature and nature conservation.

He is an active participant in the Rhino Conservation drive and is currently working in collaboration with Dylan Boerstra on the project SHARK X to create awareness for endangered ocean mammals and wildlife. This latest project utilises Jan Menzels’ X-ray images as an artistic medium to enhance the viewer’s experience and awareness of an animal as a vulnerable living being.

"The X-ray of the sculpture breathes existence into each art piece. X-rays are associated with life, as they are used to examine the living and for this purpose, the sculptures are now living too. Each with their own individualistic imprint."
